Sistema este que, no Brasil, tardou a desaparecer. E quando sumiu não houve nada, absolutamente nada que fosse feito para reparar danos e inserir ex-escravos na sociedade de forma digna. Pelo contrário, houve recompensa aos fazendeiros que sentiram-se injustiçados por não terem mais seres humanos para escravizar.
Com essa história torta o Brasil se forma; mas e no surfe? Quando os negros ao redor do mundo, e por aqui, começaram a surfar?
A popularização do surfe, de fato, se deu na Califórnia por volta de 1900, mas somente quarenta anos depois surgiria o primeiro surfista negro, com relevância na cena do esporte. Nick Gabaldon é reconhecido até hoje por ter sido o pioneiro a quebrar as barreiras raciais imputadas nos territórios estadunidenses, surfando em Malibu, em meados de 1940.
De acordo com o artigo “Surfing for Freedom: Black Surfers and Reclaiming Cultural History in Los Angeles”, publicado pelo jornalista Ryan Reft, Nick tornou-se conhecido por remar até 12 milhas de distância. O surfista percorria o trajeto com sua prancha, a partir do lugar em que os negros eram permitidos entrar no mar, até o melhor pico de ondas para surfar.
Gabaldon morreu surfando, aos 24 anos de idade, após colidir com os pilares do famosos pier de Malibu.
Surfe negro no Brasil
Segundo o jornalista Julio Adler, do podcast Bóia, um dos primeiros surfistas negros com destaque no Brasil foi Carlos Gonçalves Lima, mais conhecido como Tinguinha. No início da década de 80, o surfista era um dos poucos negros em evidência na cena nacional do surfe.
“Também tivemos o Jocélio de Jesus”, lembra Adler. De acordo com o jornalista, só na metade dos anos 80 entraria em cena Jojó de Olivença.
Tido como precursor dos aéreos no Brasil, Luiz “Neguinho”, de Santos, também é reconhecido como um dos grandes nomes da cena do surfe nacional.
Luiz Neguinho foi o precursor dos aéreos no Brasil da década de 80. Curiosamente, em 2010, Victor Bernardo, aos 13 anos, seria comparado a Luiz.

Criado em 2014, o Black Girls Surf foi inaugurado no sentido de integrar surfistas da diáspora africana. Desse modo, o coletivo apoia surfistas negras de 05 a 17 anos.
No Brasil, a surfista Erica Prado está à frente o movimento “Surfistas Negras”. Aliás, dia 23 de novembro, no Rio de Janeiro, ocorre o “1º Encontro Nacional de Surfistas Negras e Nordestinas”.
